I started blogging in April 2008 and really enjoy it! Being an extremely busy wife and mother of four, I don't get much time to write. But please do not let that keep you from coming back often as I like having you read what I write! Feel free to comment and let me know you stopped by, and enjoy reading!

The Egg Phenomenom
Can you believe it? Two posts in one day. But I just have to say this cause I need answers. So I'm going to make deviled eggs for a pot luck dinner tonight. I pull out a dozen white eggs bought at the local grocery store. I put all of them into the water...the water is warm water from the tap, but by no means hot. As I submerge the eggs, 5 of them, as they often do, start sending little microscopic bubbles up to the surface, indicating there is a hair line crack in them. Well, I decided this would not do. I don't want exploded boiled eggs, I need perfect boiled eggs. So I pull out the 5 (of 12...not a very good ratio) out to replace them with different eggs. The eggs had cracked and all but shattered. Is it just because of the temperature difference? Or some kind of pressure difference? Or what? The biggest thing it showed me is that commercial chickens are so poorly fed that their nutrition is so bad that they lay eggs with paper thin shells. I also get eggs from my mother and father who raise chickens. They have egg shells on steroids compared to the egg shells on store bought eggs. One day, I will no longer buy an egg from a grocery store period. That day is coming soon. I want to raise chickens myself. Along with cows, pigs, bees, etc....... But, we'll see. These are all but wispy dreams in my head.

So is your mother using steroids with her chickens?
And, how do you see microscopic bubbles?
yeah, mama's chickens are on steroids. and I have REALLY good eyesight. : ) hope to see you Wednesday.
Yep, it's the temp difference. And you're right about the thin shells... *sigh* I, too, long for the day I can raise my own hens...
I would love to tell you how to get that widget! :) It IS pretty cool. I saw it on Niecey's blog and loved it-- have to give credit where it's due.
If you look riiiight under the link pictures, you'll see in tiny letters a link to "Link Within". That's the name of the widget. If you click on that, it will take you to their site and they'll walk you through the process of setting it up on your blog. It's fairly easy, but if you get stuck, shoot me an email and I"ll see if I can help you out!
I bought "Farmhouse Cage-free" brown eggs from the store. They seem to have the hardest shells. I also buy Amish eggs when I get to their store but it's out of the way. I would raise chickens but I think it means you can't leave home for days at a time doesn't it?
Howard's duck eggs practically require a hammer to crack!!
Jenny Brown, I am officially going to badger you about your blog. It is time for an update. I want to see snow pictures and, by the way, you didn't have to call and rub in the fact that you were eating snow cream!
I'm ready for a new post!! This is ridiculous, you have high speed internet now. I have to hike a mile in knee deep snow to post on my blog and STILL I manage to do a better job than you! ;)
